about

Where I recently lived I had a neighbour opposite who would sit out on his balcony at all times of the day in all sorts of weather. I didn't know him or anything about him but in my mind I made up stories about his life. He was always alone so in my mind something had happened in his life to bring him to point he was now at. I thought about writing a song about him but it was only a thought. Then I woke up one night with the majority of the lyrics in my head and so I started to write the song.

lyrics

He sits on his balcony in bright sunlight.
In summer he's there in the middle of the night.
He looks quite stressed and very much alone
as he waits in vain for anyone to phone.

But hey, wasn't his life better in the good old days.
Wasn't his life better in the good old days.

Inhaling real hard on his last cigarette.
He dreams of people he's never even met.
He's down on his luck with no work to do.
He's part of the growing unemployment queque.

But hey, wasn't his life better in the good old days.
Wasn't his life better in the good old days.

Stress is real hard when it gets hold of you.
He's tried meditation but he still feels blue.
He wishes he hadn't gone and messed up his life.
If only he hadn't gone and left his wife.

But hey, wasn't his life better in the good old days.
Wasn't his life better in the good old days.
In the good old days.

about

Markham Monk Leipzig, Germany

I like all types of music.
American and British music have been my main influences.
I was drawn to Country music when I lived and traveled in the USA during the early 1980s.
These days I am mainly drawn to writing music in a easy listening country pop style although I also like writing in a slightly more country rock or pop rock style.
